Expanding knowledge through creativity and
technology
I became interested in computers in my senior year in high school in
Santa Barbara, and went on to earn my masters in Computer Based Education
from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. But technology didn’t fulfill my
imaginative spirit, so I began writing and won First Prize in a CWC short
story contest in 1993. I became involved with SLO NightWriters, designing
and editing their newsletter for several years before serving as President
from 1997 to ‘99. While living in San Luis Obispo I did marketing
for the SLO Art Center, taught creative writing at Cuesta College, and
received a grant from the SLO Arts Counsel.
Technology is still a large part of my life. Since moving back to Santa
Barbara I’ve written an Internet review column for the Montecito
Journal, and taught computer classes at Santa Barbara Adult Education
and Braille Institute. I’m now a Production Assistant at The Santa
Barbara Channels 17/21 which provides public and educational television
to Cox customers in the SB area, and I’m working on video projects
of my own. But I'm still involved in web design and other multimedia.
My other website, Angle
on Writing, was chosen as one of Writers Digest’s 101
best sites for 2005.
Another of my creative endeavors is theater for adults and children.
I’ve been involved both on stage and behind the scenes. I'm currently
working on writing a stage play, as well as a couple of novels.
My love of the ocean and the outdoors is enriched by my involvement in
the Channel Islands Naturalist Corps. As a part of this group I’ve
lead hikes on Santa Cruz Island and talked to people on whale watch boats.
